Kalmar Constellation
To guide Kalmar’s future growth, asensio_mah proposed a framework that enables different scenarios, associations and relationships between the town’s programs and uses as well as different rates of implementation. For us, a strategy of representing Kalmar as a constellation of different parts provided a positive instrument for defining adaptive growth. This organizational concept of a constellation guides the project development across different scales addressed by the project.
Kalmar’s urbanization and agricultural practices are considered as a starting point, As it is currently practiced, runoff from urbanization and agriculture contributes to the eutrophication of the Baltic sea, indexed by the elevated presence of phosphorous and nitrogen. Our proposal transforms this waste as inputs for new practices to provide Kalmar with an alternative cultivated environment and enabling new lifestyles. These will center around the careful cultivation of a proposed expanded forest resource for biomass production as well as the harvesting and processing of agricultural and urban runoff for both water treatment and in some cases: algae cultivation.
